Leadership Strategy

Leadership structures that hold under pressure.

Football clubs rarely fail for lack of ambition. They fail because the leadership layer, the connection between ownership intent and daily execution, is poorly designed. Roles overlap, authority is contested, and strategy exists as a document rather than a set of decisions. SSG works with owners, boards, and executives to design leadership structures that survive contact with a losing run.

What we do

  • Leadership assessment: how direction is set, translated, and where it breaks down between boardroom and training ground.
  • Target structure design: decision rights defined at every level of the club.
  • Operating rhythm: meetings, reporting, and escalation that keep ownership, executive, and sporting leadership aligned.
  • Role design: appointment criteria built on the role, not personalities.

How we work

Engagements are scoped and finite. Most begin with a Structural Review, which establishes the evidence base, followed by a defined design phase. We do not embed indefinitely; the objective is a leadership system your club runs without us.

The evidence base

Our approach draws on the Integrated Performance Structures Framework, research identifying leadership cohesion as one of three primary performance determinants in resource-constrained clubs, and on applied work including a full strategic review for Bury FC.

If your club’s strategy changes every time results dip, the problem is structural, not motivational.
